The Professional Recovery Path: beyond lived experience

Professionalism — not just sobriety — is the foundation of sustainable recovery.

Clinical perspectives: Chula Goonewardene MBACP, Clinical Director, The Anthony Group Practice (AGP) · with thanks to Anthony McLellan.

The Professionalisation Pathway

From survivor of the system to architect of care

Personal recovery inspires. Professional roles demand more: specific training, registration, supervision, and natural aptitude. The pathway transitions an individual across the bridge — from lived experience to accredited, sustainable practice.

i

Lived Experience

Surviving addiction and breaking the cycle. The story is the spark — never the qualification.

ii

Assessing Aptitude

Recognising that clinical work requires natural emotional intelligence, not just a desire to help.

iii

Formal Accreditation

Securing rigorous professional registration and credentials — BACP/UKCP/EMCC, ICF, and now MAUNi Certified.

iv

Clinical Supervision

Committing to ongoing supervision and the maintenance of absolute clinical boundaries.

Four Clinical Principles

What separates a coach from a pseudo-therapist

Foundation

Validate lived experience with formal qualifications

Personal recovery inspires; professional roles require specific training, registration, and natural aptitude. Being in recovery doesn't automatically make you a good clinician.

Empathy

Pain is relative, not comparative

Intrinsic human worth is equal. The high-end client and the frontline client suffer differently — but deserve the same empathy. True clinical empathy meets people exactly where they are, without judgment or comparison.

Modality

Therapy unpacks while coaching builds

Optimal care uses psychotherapy for trauma and coaching to rebuild a life. They are not competitive — they are highly complementary, sequential phases of one systemic intervention.

Safeguard

Beware "pseudo-therapists"

Blurred boundaries, rogue centres, and the commercialisation of crisis exploit families at moments of ultimate desperation. Ensure practitioners hold clear clinical supervision and registered accreditation.

Two Disciplines, One Pathway

Therapy vs coaching

Psychotherapy

Looking backward — unpacking

  • Focus: deep trauma work, exploring history, resolving psychological baselines.
  • Framework: unpacking the past to understand the present.
  • Credentials: MBACP, BPS, UKCP.

Professional Coaching

Looking forward — building

  • Focus: practical reintegration, resocialisation, positive psychology.
  • Framework: taking the unpacked elements and constructing a sustainable future.
  • Credentials: ICF, EMCC — and now MAUNi Certified.

"In the modern treatment ecosystem, therapy and coaching are not competitive; they are highly complementary sequential phases."

The MAUNi Standard

Why specialist certification matters

Generalist bodies like ICF and EMCC accredit excellent coaches — but addiction recovery demands specialist expertise. MAUNi certification operates under the global ISO17024 standard for certification of personnel, with CPD-accredited training and a systemic approach that moves beyond "not taking drugs" to building a whole life.

The MAUNi advantage: ISO17024, CPD accreditation, specialist addiction-recovery focus.
"The legacy of true clinical care is simply this: offering the space for great clinicians to do great systemic work — and to help people heal."
